I have visited Terengganu 2 weeks ago in conjunction with Terengganu Homestay Food & Culture Festival 2019. THFCF was Visit My Kampung program organized by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture to strengthen the economy among the villagers with their active involvement in the tourism event. By doing so, it could preserve the culture, lifestyle, tradition and heritage of the local community.
A total of 7 homestays involved, these were Homestay Felda Selasih, Homestay Felcra Keruak, Homestay Kupang Depu, Homestay Kpg Rhu 10, Homestay Kpg Teluk Ketapang, Homestay Kpg Pasir Raja, Homestay Felcra Seri Bandi.
The main objective of this program was to let us experience the unique "kampung" life here. The best way was to stay together with the foster family in a house which gives you a better picture of village-style living. For more details on the homestay, you could refer to the Tourism Malaysia website.
Some called it daun pokok gajus. The first bite is full with sweet aroma but what coming next and thereafter was total bitterness. But the local eat this as ulam (salad).
I only took note on the roof of Terengganu residential house after being notified by a travel mate. She asked the tour guide for why the roof always has something like a stick on top. I even saw one house stuffed with 5 needle-like sticks on top. Any answer from you guys?
We even visited a goat farm. We thought of milking the goat but it turns out we only observe them eating. According to the owner, if we want to milk the goat in the evening, we have to feed them in the morning. Thus, if we feed them in the evening, we can milk them the next morning. And he said every day the goat can be milked. The owner also told that giving them the Napier grass, they will able to produce more milk.
Now, can anyone guess what's the red thing tying up there in the middle? What's that for? Please comment below.
We did not go back empty-handed. We tasted the freshest goat milk from his own farm.
This is satar, a Malay food.
The paddy field view in Kg Kupang Depu before raining looked so peaceful. We supposed to have some planned activities in the paddy field but had to cancel it since the rain did not stop.
Looking back at all the cuisine that I tasted in the food booth during the homestay festival, I totally forgot all the names except lemang. Luckily I had recorded them and I will show them in my vlog soon :)
At night, we had the official opening ceremony with some speech from the related bodies and some interesting shows. To my surprise, they even have the Silat, Muay Thai and Dikir Barat performance. I believe we could see more of this cultural shows if we stay more days here. Thus, I recommend you guys to take the homestay package if you plan to see more of traditional Malay lifestyle in Terengganu, they have their unique ways from their language, food and culture compared with the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
Stay tuned for more stories of Terengganu.
lots of fun
