We deeply and sincerely apologize for our recent “Legenda Cun Raya” video which was released on social media in Malaysia. The 15 minute video was inspired by the Malay legend Dayang Senandong made popular in the 1965 movie “Dayang Senandong’. It was our intention to convey concepts of inner and outer beauty, unfortunately the video instead offended many.
Regretfully, we acknowledge that the “Legenda Cun Raya” video is not in-line with the values that we hold dearly in Malaysia. Watsons Malaysia takes responsibility for the video and its content and is truly sorry that some elements have offended the general public.
Watsons Malaysia following the feedback from the general public, immediately removed the video and we appreciate your honest feedback especially leading into an important celebration like Hari Raya. Moving forward we will continue to listen to the general public and our loyal customers. On behalf of Watsons Malaysia we humbly seek your forgiveness and deeply regret any harm that we have caused.

officially from Watsons team
I have came across their FB page with tonnes of negative comments and feedback. Never I thought the Raya ads will have such an impact among members of public. I watched once during their launching. As I have no much idea on the original story Dayang Senandong who was cursed to have black skin, which later Watsons adapted to use in their latest ads, the reaction of theis FB fans shocked me with the comments bashing the team and the ads with bad words. Personally, I watched twice only I get to know the message behind. (may be I'm bit slow to catch up the story) I think the mistake is not made on purpose to bash people with dark skin colour or having any racism issue on it. Just hope everyone will give them a chance to improve on it.

Nowadays the advertisers cannot simply do promotional advertorial otherwise they get lashed by publics. Public opinion is more important.
ReplyDeleteI have not watch the advert yet. Just noticed few people posted in fb today.
Oh dear, glad Watsons has managed to rectify the issue before the fire spreads further. xoxo
