Rungus is one of the ethnic tribe living in Sabah. I rarely heard about this tribe in Peninsular Malaysia. (perhaps I did not concentrate in History class last time) During my Sabah visit, I notice that they are residing primarily in northern Sabah in the area surrounding Kudat.

Modernisation makes everything changes including their lifestyles. Most of the Rungus folks shift to the city for living and sight of its traditional long house where they stayed together in old days getting rare. To my surprise, there are a few of Rungus long houses built on stilts remained and opened for visit in Kg Bavanggazo near Tinangol.
Traditionally,
the Rungus people live in longhouses built on stilts, but the shift to
modern-day living has meant that the sight of such longhouses are
getting more rare. - See more at:

If you coming from Kota Kinabalu city (where airport located), the whole road journey takes around 2 hours 6 mins+ for 132km distance. As transportation in Sabah is not so developed, it is advised to book a tour with local tour agency or rent a car. Compare with Peninsular Malaysia, the road is quite bumpy along the way to Kg Bavanggazo so make sure you have your seat belt on. (hardly get a nap in the car...LOL)

The dishes did not look tempting but never judge the book by its cover, it was so tasty! I was told that Rungus tribe eats lots of vegetables and seldom consume meats. I also found that the simple dishes prepared and served is not oily but healthy and suits my taste bud.

After lunch, we walked to the long house for visit. Longhouses are dwellings in which several families live together in separate rooms.

This is how the room of Rungus tribe looks like. Ignore the mattress, pillow and mosquito net, that's not related to Rungus traditional living. Just for your information, the rooms at long house are available to rent out to visitors who plan to stay a night there to experience the Rungus communal traditional lifestyle.

Look at her crafts work. I have been told that the bead adornment with a human figure on it is expensive compared with others. I forgot what is the reason behind, but I guess it takes a lot of works and time-consuming.

This is one of its kind of Rungus plaything. The owner said that in old days those Rungus guys who wish to marry with another Rungus girl must pass through the test by successfully putting in the thread and out from it. They are considered as ideal candidate if they can do it. I think it is really a good tool to test a guy's patience, intelligence and determination to marry a girl he loves. What do you think? I watched more than twice the owner demo it but I still can't catch the trick. LOL...more time is needed

Out of curiosity, I put it on. It is said as modern day 'corset'. There are big coiled rings and small coiled rings for different body size. It is very easy to wear it but very hard to take off....hahaha I need the owner's help because it is very heavy and stuck at my chest part LOL...awkward and good lesson for me not to be so playful
